Treatment Options

  • Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is sometimes required to fix problems or damage that has occurred to the mouth, teeth, and / or jaw. Oral surgery is sometimes referred to as "Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery" which combines oral surgery with surgery on the structures of the face, sinuses and neck.

Oral surgery is commonly performed to remove wisdom teeth, prepare the mouth for dentures, repair jaw problems and perform root canals. Oral surgeons may also perform more advanced procedures as required after trauma or severe disease damages the structures of the mouth.

    Tooth Extractions

Every tooth extraction is different. Some are simple and some require more extensive procedures.

Surgical extraction of teeth is required whenever the tooth cannot be removed by simple forcep extraction.

Conditions that could warrant surgical removal would include cracked teeth, impacted teeth, severely decayed teeth, or any condition that makes the extraction a bit difficult.

    Alveloplasty (bone surgery)

Alveloplasty is the reshaping of bone during or after a tooth extraction in order to improve contours in preparation for tooth replacement. This procedure is most often completed in conjunction with tooth removal but can be completed as an independent procedure.

When teeth are removed, the extraction socket left behind often has sharp areas of bone under the gums. When the area heals, these sharp areas can poke through the overlying gums making the area very sore or if a removable appliance is in use, making it very difficult to wear the appliance comfortably.

Alveoloplasty is a procedure where the sharp areas of bone are reshaped during the extraction to promote optimal contours of the ridge when healed, especially when removable restorations are planned or are currently in use.
